PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
Should I be applying for Professional Registration and how do I go about it ?
RADIATION PROTECTION
COUNCIL
Background The Professional Register is operated by the Radiation Protection Council ( RPC ), which sets the standards for establishing and managing the Register and approves processes for admitting individuals to it and , if necessary , removing individuals from it . SRP is licensed by RPC to admit members to the Register .
Registration is available to any member of SRP or an IRPA affiliated member ( through one of our Partner Societies ) working in any aspect of radiation protection . It is not just for those who are Radiation Protection Advisers ( RPAs ) or Radioactive Waste Advisers ( RWAs ), but is also open to those working in , for example , non-ionising radiation safety , criticality , dosimetry , metrology and radiography .
So why would you want to become registered ? Increasingly , employers and clients seek to ensure that those they engage are recognised in their profession . This gives assurance that they are working with professionals who will provide sound advice and good judgment based on up-to-date knowledge and experience and are committed to a professional code of conduct .
What level should you apply for ? There are three tiers of registration available , each requiring a different level of knowledge and experience applied in work associated with radiation protection .
Registration as a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional ( CRadP ) is only available to SRP Full Members , Fellows and IRPA affiliate members . To be qualified at this level it would be expected that in your work you provide guidance , advice and / or generate radiological protection ( RP ) standards and have extensive knowledge and responsible professional experience in RP and its allied fields . A typical applicant might be an experienced certificated adviser or consultant , or the leader of a professional health physics or research team .
To qualify for registration as an Incorporated Radiation Protection Professional ( IRadP ) you will provide guidance on RP measures and might advise on applications of current or developing technology in RP . A typical applicant here might be a recently certificated adviser or consultant , a researcher or the supervisor of technicians / surveyors .
To be registered as a Technical Radiation Protection Professional ( TechRadP ) you will work in a practical RP role , routinely applying established techniques and procedures to solve practical problems . You will typically be an RP technician or surveyor , an X-ray or dosimetry technician , or a Laser or Electromagnetic Field ( EMF ) safety officer .
If unsure you can always seek advice through the SRP website , or email admin @ srp-uk . org
So how do you apply ? Simply download and complete the application form and follow the guidance . Your application will be assessed against the relevant registration criteria by three assessors .
So that ’ s the system in a nutshell . What are you waiting for ?!
