Annual Conference News The 2024 Annual Conference programme is one of our most comprehensive yet . It ' s packed full of interesting and novel talks with something for everyone . Of particular note is a presentation by SRP Fellow James Cairns on the first 48 hours of the Litvinenko case . Back in 2006 , James was the UK Police Radiation Protection Adviser and therefore a key individual in the murder investigation . We also have a presentation from Frank Harris of Rio Tinto Australia on the infamous Lost Radioactive Source Capsule . New this year is the earlier opening of the exhibition ( from 09.00 Tuesday morning ) and of course we have our pre-conference 5K – now free to enter – along the seafront . All we need is some sunshine !
New Events Committee Chair , Pete Bryant , says : “ The Events Committee has worked really hard on the programme for this year ' s Annual Conference . It will have something for all radiation protection professionals , from the future of Radiation Protection with a heavy focus on the ICRP Review of the System of Protection , to themed sessions covering Medical , Nuclear , Emergency Preparedness and Security . Going forward we are keen to focus our programmes on the needs of members and to represent the diversity of the Society , so please send in your suggestions !”

The IRMF and its Events The Ionising Radiation Metrology Forum ( IRMF ) is for those involved in the measurement of ionising radiation . It aims to promote good practice in radiological measurements , including the need for traceability to the appropriate national standards ; it also organises measurement comparisons in the UK . The IRMF is supported by SRP ' s Metrology and Measurement Science Committee . Each year the IRMF runs two events ; these are usually held in Warrington ( January ) and Harwell ( June ). This summer , the 5 June IRMF event will be followed by an instrument training day on 6 June - giving trainees a better understanding of the practical aspects of instrument calibration and use . The day is for anyone with a radiation protection background interested in learning more on the “ how ” and “ why ” radiological instruments are calibrated .
