Gary Teague is CEO of Gemini Technology and the Affiliated Organisation ( AOrg ) Representative on SRP Council . In this issue of Radiation Protection Today he shares details of a business collaboration developed as a result of AOrg membership .
Some of the major benefits about being an Affiliated Organisation ( AOrg ) are the friendships and potential collaborations you can make with fellow AOrgs . It ’ s such a small market and we are lucky to have such a broad range of AOrgs that offer solutions for complex requirements .
A high demand in the metrology community for automatic calibration has prompted a group of AOrgs to work on an exciting new concept for automatic Calibration to Measurement Good Practice Guide 113 ( MGPG113 ). Gemini Technology is working on the mechanical design , with Nuvia developing the calibration software and ChartHouse providing the reading software .
The aim of the machine is to cover the full range of PEDs currently on the market by using a generic holder that will accurately place the PED under each radiation source for 5 minutes . The standard machine will have a high / low Cs-137 calibration source ( using tungsten attenuator ), Am-241 and Kr-85 ( Beta ) calibration sources , as well as a station zero for checks on background ,
display and sound . The machine will be fully shielded whilst the PED is on the linear belt or under the radiation nuclide being exposed to < 1 µ Sv / h , and the sources used will all be below High-Activity Sealed Radioactive Sources ( HASS ) limits . PEDs will be automatically fed onto the linear belt from an input cartridge , go through the full cycle as per MGPG113 , and then be automatically placed into Pass / Fail output cartridges . A test certificate for each PED will be generated automatically .
The launch date for the first machine is June 2024 , so please look out for the advert in the next issue of Radiation Protection Today . y t ie c o
