Radiation Protection Today Winter 2025 Issue 9 | Page 3

Welcome and farewell Welcome to the Winter 2025 issue of Radiation Protection Today. After five years I have reluctantly decided to step down as Editor due to other work demands. In addition to the stimulation of being exposed to the diverse aspects of the field of radiation protection, it has been a privilege to work alongside such knowledgeable and experienced colleagues on the Magazine Committee and the production team at Harris Associates. I believe we have established a firm foundation from which the magazine can develop further and am pleased to pass the editorial baton to Maureen McQueen and deputy editor Samantha Watson. I am grateful for their early support in getting the current issue over the line. I will remain an active member of the Magazine Committee and look forward to contributing thoughts and articles to future issues. My last issue as Editor features articles on radioactive waste management. Recent years have seen the crystallisation of significant changes in this field which have taken place over the course of my career. These developments will have a fundamental impact on the management of radioactive wastes in the future. In addition to articles outlining the evolution of radioactive waste policy and High Activity Waste management practices in the UK, there are discussions of criticality risks, explosive hazards and the use of active demonstrators to improve waste management practices. There are also contributions on radioactive waste management in Australia, and the UK ' s civil plutonium stockpile. We have a thought-provoking piece on the public perception of radiation and an interview with a leading expert in environmental radiological protection. There are also articles on extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation, the role of international standards in the post-Brexit era and the clean-up of an animal research facility. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions of articles for future issues- please email RPToday @ srp-uk. org. Trevor Jones – Editor
