Since 1963 , SRP ’ s events programme has been an important part of Society activity . The very first meeting was held at Imperial College , London on 30th October 1963 on the subject of ‘ Biological Monitoring ’ and was attended by 60 members . The venue charged eight shillings per head for the lunch and coffee ( so 40p in today ’ s money ) and , following Council ’ s decision to charge delegates a little bit more than this , the event made a welcome contribution to Society funds of £ 5 .
Up until 1987 the AGM was linked with a oneday meeting and normally held in London . In 1987 the meetings were extended to two days . The Council report for that year states the decision was made ‘ Partly with the intent of giving time for more thorough discussion … and partly … for better attendance at both the AGM and the Dinner . The organisation involved was substantially greater than for a one-day meeting and it is therefore not a venture that could be repeated too often .’ However there was definitely demand for a longer event and in 1992 , the two-day Annual Conference became the norm , increasing to the current three-day format in 2013 . Yes – we can confirm that the organisation involved is definitely substantially greater – but well worth it !
For the last thirty years the Annual Conference has moved around the UK using locations in Oxford , Birmingham , Cambridge , Edinburgh , Cardiff , Exeter , Warwick , Keele , Portsmouth , Southport , Nottingham , Poole , Harrogate , Eastbourne , Llandudno , Aberdeen , Scarborough and Bournemouth .
