Radiation Protection Today Summer 2021 | Page 7

passion of current President Pete Bryant , but , due to emerging Covid issues , Jim has concerns that much more still needs to be achieved : “ Something that we haven ’ t grasped the nettle on I think , is the current membership demographics . 50 % of our members are 50 years old or over . That ’ s huge ; we really need to grasp this . We talk about engagement and outreach and part of that is our style of communication .” So the focus on diversity , both of SRP and the radiation protection field as a whole , will continue into Jim ’ s term . Of diversity within SRP Jim says , “ I do see so much room for improvement . I ’ m not sure whether the Society isn ’ t representing the diversity in the workforce that ’ s already there , or the workforce itself is not diverse , and we then need to play a role in helping it diversify .”

Finally , Jim told me how he feels about the job ahead of him as the incoming SRP President . He feels “ proud and humbled ” and acknowledged the work of many of the Past Presidents , as well as the SRP Admin
Team at Harris Associates “ who have provided some fantastic service over the years ”. But Jim also acknowledges that “ the hardest job in the entire Society ... is being Honorary Secretary . Claire-Louise Chapple has done a wonderful job and is stepping down ; Mary Allan is taking over and it ’ s a tough job and it ’ s something the Society needs to recognise .” Their role is very broad and they are involved with many aspects of the Society . Claire-Louise will still be very busy as she has recently been elected to the IRPA ( International Radiation Protection Association ) Executive Council and we wish her all the best .
Summary Jim was a really easy person to talk to ; an interesting guy and happy to offer advice and support . We wish him every success in his new role .
