New Student Award Scheme
SRP has launched a Student Award Scheme to reward students studying for higher education qualifications, including apprenticeships, in courses where there is an element of radiation protection. The aim is to encourage students to consider related careers and to raise the profile of the Society in the academic sector.
The Award is available to any educational establishment to apply for. It consists of a cash prize of £ 500 per year. Successful applications will cover funding for a three year period before any new application is required. The criteria for the Award is up to the establishment and can be awarded for best student, best progress or similar achievement.
First Student Prize Awarded The inaugural SRP Student Prize was recently awarded jointly to Laura Mcardle and Tom Feeney Shaw in recognition of their outstanding achievement in the Radiometrics MSc programme at the University of Liverpool. The prize was shared as they both achieved the identical final grade!
Laura completed her MSc research project in collaboration with Cerberus Nuclear, entitled: " Developing a 3-In-1 Radiation Detection Unit for Characterisation of Unknown Radiation Sources through Gamma Ray, Thermal Neutron and Fast Neutron Analysis in Industrial Settings”. Laura is now completing a PhD at the University of Liverpool as part of the Skills And Training Underpinning a Renaissance in Nuclear( SATURN) Centre for Doctoral Training( CDT).
Tom completed his MSc research project in collaboration with the Radiometric Systems Group at Sellafield Ltd, entitled:“ Characterisation of a ⁴He-Based Fast Neutron Detector to Determine the Quantity and Distribution of Plutonium in Industrial Settings”. Tom will be starting a PhD at the University of Liverpool next year.

The award is named in recognition of Professor Pete Cole( below), a long time Professor at the University of Liverpool, Radiation Protection Adviser to the University and Past- President of SRP( 2015 / 17) as well as many other achievements.
