netball league . I have played for the same team for about 16 years , though the team has changed a bit over that time . Umpiring is more recent and I have only been qualified for about 5 years . It is a bit like being a parent – just make a decision and follow it through . My husband and the kids all play in the local brass band , so I am often found lugging band equipment to a variety of venues ( from churches to fields ) and generally helping out .
Do you have any advice for others within the profession ? Always say yes to opportunities for which you are available and that appeal to you . Most of the rest of the stuff in your life can shuffle round to allow you to take the opportunity . You may not be asked again if you say no .
Also remember everyone is human and has a life outside work which may or may not be going well . Be a human first , and if someone looks like they need support , offer it . You may just make a difference .
What do you wish someone had told you at the start of your career ? Great question – I think if someone had told me when I first joined SRP in 2005 that 18 years later I would be SRP President , I would have laughed at them . I believe that if things are meant to be then they will happen , and if they don ’ t then it wasn ’ t meant to be .
What career achievements are you most proud of ? I think it is my SRP firsts – I am an RGG founder member , was the first RGG member elected to SRP Council and the first SRP Council member to take maternity leave . Now I am the youngest female SRP President .
Jennifer can be contacted at president @ srp-uk . org
