Radiological surveys and monitoring
Although the physics of different types of radiation have long been understood , the system of radiological protection continues to be developed as society ' s uses of radiation increases and our understanding of the
biological effects evolves . Advances in radiation detection , monitoring and dosimetry technologies have enhanced the ability to assess and mitigate radiation risks , and computerisation has enabled more accurate dose assessments . International organisations such as the ICRP and IAEA play a crucial role in developing and promoting a standardised system of radiological protection through the publication of guidelines and recommendations based on the latest scientific evidence .
The challenges of radiological protection are not restricted to ionising radiations . This issue of Radiation Protection Today includes a thought-provoking article on the interference of electromagnetic radiation with implanted medical devices , which are fitted to 8-12 million people worldwide .
Alongside regular sections , this issue of the magazine features articles on the theme of radiological surveys and monitoring . These cover the development of electronic dosemeters and personal dosimetry ; differences in monitoring instruments designed for civilian and military use ; the design of radiological surveys and monitoring programmes for different purposes ; and what constitutes a Qualified Person for radiation metrology . There is also an article discussing differences in regulatory approaches to radiation protection between different countries .
A recent letter ( page 12 ) highlights the ease of access which SRP provides to a wide network of experts covering all aspects of radiological protection . If you have a technical question , feel strongly about a topic , or would like to contribute to a future issue of the magazine , please get in touch by emailing RPToday @ srp-uk . org .
