Radiation Protection Today Autumn 2024 Issue 7 | Page 3

SRP ' s Royal Charter states the role of the Society is to “ promote the science and art of radiation protection ”. This recognises the key role of radiation protection professionals in interpreting scientific understanding and applying it to real life situations .
This issue of Radiation Protection Today contains a selection of articles covering both the “ science ” and “ art ”. In addition to regular features , an RPA and RWA explains how seeing the influence of their advice makes the job so rewarding , and there is an outstanding article on mental health and coping with pressure in the workplace which should be essential reading for all professionals . We also have three articles on different aspects of radiation exposure during pregnancy , including effects on the foetus and whether to inform your employer .
On the “ science ” side , there are articles on critical examinations , radiological modelling for emergency planning and response , specialist dosimetry , monitoring workplaces for radon and a Soapbox piece arguing against making radiation risk assessments too long . There are also articles examining how radiation protection has changed , including the evolution of ionising radiation regulations and the practice of Health Physics in 1959 .
Radiation protection must continue to adapt to meet future challenges , including the tripling of world nuclear capacity , the deployment of new medical and net zero technologies , and issues of attracting and training the next generation workforce . These and related topics will be discussed at the next SRP Annual Conference in Hull on 13-15 May 2025 . The deadline for oral abstracts is 28 October 2024 and for poster abstracts is 24 February 2025 .

Cover photograph : Provided by Cerberus Nuclear - a wireframe CAD drawing of a bi-plane X-ray machine in a catheterisation laboratory . The contours show the X-ray radiation being blocked by the lead shielding in the walls of the room . Two contours are shown : an interpolated contour in block colours on the XY plane and a noninterpolated contour on the YZ plane . The image was produced using Cyclone from Orthrus Software .
