Seeing the real-life impact Another important part of my job is providing formal radiation protection training sessions , both at our training centre at Chilton and at on-site workplaces . Since the pandemic , UKHSA has also been delivering training online , which was challenging to start with but has now become routine . And we ' re seeing now how effective this has been at reaching and influencing more of those affected by radiation at work .
Seeing how wide the impact of my role is makes this such a rewarding career . I get to see the influence I ' ve had in a workplace – from doing the initial review , advising on improvements and helping people to understand the importance of taking action , to then seeing those improvements in action . This makes it all worthwhile and boosts my passion for the work I do .

How do you become a Radiation Protection Adviser ? A Radiation Protection Adviser is legally required to hold a Certificate of Competence awarded by an HSE approved Assessing Body such as RPA 2000 . This organisation was set up in the year 2000 for the sole purpose of certifying competence in ionising and non ionising radiation protection practice . Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate to assessors that they have the required level of core competence . An RPA 2000 Certificate of Competence remains valid for a period of 5 years , before the end of which it must be renewed .
At the time of publication there are 561 holders of a current RPA Certificate of Competence . A list ( updated monthly ) is available on the RPA 2000 website .
